Diaper cakes/ Tutu Ideas

Diaper Cakes!
I became interested in diaper cakes when I started looking for a cute baby shower gift for a friend. I loved the idea of the diaper cake but hated the price! So I decided I could probably make my own diaper cake for less, come on how hard can it really be…and that how I got started making diaper cakes!

Below is a picture of one of the first diaper cakes I made. This diaper cake is actually a rolled diaper cake meaning all the diapers are individual rolled and secured with a rubber band.

Materials:

  • 90-100 disposable diapers
  • Rubber bands
  • 3 different styles, size, and colored ribbon
  • Wooden characters
  • Cardstock
  • Circut
  • Cake tray
  • Tissue paper or cut up paper strips
  • Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun

Below is another diaper cake I made using the rolled diapers. For this diaper cake, I decided to cover all the diapers/tiers using cardstock, pink zebra and lime green ribbon. Instead of covering the second tier with card stock, I decided to use a skirt that I purchased for the baby. To add a finally detail, I cricut out the letter J for Justine!
Materials:
  • 90-100 disposable diapers
  • Rubber bands
  • 2 different styles, size, and colored ribbon
  • Cardstock
  • Circut
  • Baby clothes
  • Cake tray
  • Tissue paper or cut up paper strips
  • Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun

What you can make a diaper cake without rolling up 90 to 100 diapers? Yes, that’s right folks there an easier way to make a diaper cake! It’s called a spiral diaper cake and to be honest this is my favorite way to make a diaper cake, it looks clean and classy! Oh, and did I tell you that you actually use LESS diapers!

Materials:
  • 60-100 diapers (depends on the amount of tiers your making) I was able to make one 3-tier diaper cake and one 2-tier diaper cake using 96 diapers!
  • Cake pans of various sizes (12, 10, and 8 inches)
  • Large rubber bands
  • 3 or less different, style, sizes, and colored ribbon
  • Flowers (from Hobby Lobby print a 40% off coupon from the website)
  • Cake tray
  • Tissue paper or cut up paper strips
  • Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun

Tutus

For the hat-

  • I used a sun hat from the dollar store!
  • Satin ribbon
  • hot glue gun
  • flowers(also from the dollar store) I just pulled them of the plastic stems
Hot glue the satin ribbon around the hat. make sure you leave some slack so you have a little to hang. Then hot glue the flowers on and you got your self a tea hat!

My daughters birthday tutu and hat that I made for her tea party birthday!
For the tutu I used-
  • About 10 yards of tulle cut into strips of about 4-5in thick( this tutu was for a 4year old depending on how thick and the size of the person you may need more or less.
  • elastic( measure the persons waist then subtract 2in because once you add the tulle the elastic stretches a bit)
  • Satin ribbon
  • A clip on flower( I like the flowers that already have the little clip on them because you can move it around and when your not using the tutu the flower clip can also be a hair clip. You can find them at most craft stores)
  • needle and thread to sew the elastic band shut. Some people use a glue gun it totally up to you
  • Measuring tape to measure tulle

Decide what length to make your tutu. The length of your tutu is entirely up to you. You can measure from your child’s waist to the mid thigh, knee, or ankle. I have added a chart to help determine the length of tulle you will need depending on how long you want the tutu. Take one of your pre-cut strips and fold it in half. Ensure that the ends remain even. Form a loop at the top of the folded side of your tulle strip.
Slide the loop behind your elastic waistband. Ensure that the ends of the
tulle remain even. Take the two ends and put them through the loop.
Pull both ends through the loop. Pull the ends down to tighten your knot.
 Adjust the knot as needed.

Do not pull the knot too tight or it will scrunch the elastic waistband.
Continue tying your strips of tulle until you have completely filled
your elastic waistband. Slide your knots together to ensure a full and
fluffy tutu. Now that your tutu is complete. Tie a piece of satin ribbon
at the top on the elastic for the halter top look then clip on the flower.
Then take another piece of satin ribbon and tie it around the waste for the
empire waste look and your look is complete.
